With critical issues like the climate change crisis impacting how the fashion industry has evolved over the years, it comes as no surprise that many celebrities favoured sustainability at Met Gala 2022.
As part of going for eco-conscious attire for the Met Gala 2022, some stars graced the red carpet with their upcycled couture. In retrospect, it also took fashion enthusiasts back to the memory lane of some of the fashion industry’s memorable designers.
Below are some of the best looks that combined this year’s theme, Gilded Glamour, with sustainability at Met Gala 2022.

Kim Kardashian appeared on the red carpet in a stunning nude dress designed by Jean Louis. This vintage piece is unique because it was the same attire that Marilyn Monroe wore when she sang the birthday song to John F Kennedy in 1962.
The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star’s look was exquisite. She paired the tightly-fitted dress with a white fur coat and striking diamond earrings. Her metallic-coloured hair bun complimented the entire fit perfectly.
Kim Kardashian’s decision to pick an outfit from the archives rather than have a new dress made for the event brought a page of history and featured sustainability at Met Gala 2022.
Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish’s first Met Gala look still lives in our heads rent-free, and now, for this star-studded event, she is back with the same glory. The Bad Guy singer went for a Gucci satin gown in gold and green. She paired it with what is said to be the tightest corset.
Designed by Alessandro Michele, the dress was made in an eco-friendly manner by taking pre-existing pieces from the Italian fashion house. For accessories, Billie Eilish opted for vintage jewellery and vegan-leather wedges.
Speaking about this Avante-garde look that prioritised sustainability at Met Gala, the Grammy-winning star said that “nothing was wasted.”
Camila Cabello

Another celebrity who went for an upcycled look is the My Oh My singer, Camila Cabello. She looked stunning as she walked up the stairs in her white Prabal Gurung dress that had beautiful floral work on it.
Camila Cabello finished the look with a white 3D effect nail work that matched the dress and a high bun accessorised with crafty flowers.
Her simple-yet-elegant look contrasted her last Met Gala look when she wore a sparkly outfit from Michael Kors.

Discussing this Met Gala’s aim to bring together archival pieces, Cynthia Erivo talked about sustainable fashion and the ability to bring out creativity by creating something new from old parts. That is what The Color Purple actress’ look reflected, especially her headscarf.
Cynthia Erivo wore a lovely Louis Vuitton dress and pointing at her white headscarf, she said it was a “sheet with tulle.” This beautiful headpiece celebrated Black culture as it was an ode to the tino that Louisianna women wore in the 1800s.
Emma Chamberlain

Her stylist and best friend, Jared Ellner, dressed her in a cream-coloured crop top that he paired with a white satin skirt. This custom Louis Vuitton attire was complete with Emma Chamberlain’s 3D nails and platinum-blonde hairdo, which she topped off with a tiara.
Combined with her accessories and makeup, the social media influencer channelled Gilded Glamour and sustainability at Met Gala.
